BOOK YOUR TRIP EARLY
We prefer to use small and intimate accommodations, managed by local touroperators who support the local people and their environments - at the most remote and unique locations avoiding mass tourism.
These exclusive accommodations are extremely popular and are booked up very quickly. Some of them can only accommodate up to 8 people. If you are interested in any safari that we offer we advise you to contact us early so we can make arrangements and be sure to fit in the accommodation of your choice into your itinerary.
The Mfuwe Lodge is a unique lodge situated in the South Luangwa National Park with 18 luxury en-suite thatched chalets, each with a private decking area that overlooks a lagoon that attracts abundant wildlife and game from the African bush.
Safaris comprise game drives, night drives, walking safaris and birdwatching. Depending on the season you can even undertake a boatsafari on the Luangwa river.
Safaris are done in early in the morning and late afternoon so that in between them and the delicious diners you will have time to relax near the huge swimmingpool which borders a lagoon where you can often see animals drink or taking a bath.
Or you can visit the library which is entirely dedicated to nature conservation related issues, African culture, tradition and history, or just enjoy the comfort of your lodge.
Emerald Season
During the ranyseason December - March the bush gets vivid and vibrant emerald green, there are flowers coming up and everything is getting green, lots of baby animals can be seen, migrant birds arrive, the electrical storms light up the landscape at night and at the end of the rains its peak viewing time for the rare wild dog.
Birdwatching
Birdwatching is magnificient. Near the end of the dry season, when the river and oxbow lagoons begin to recede, hundreds of large waterbirds can be seen wading through the shallows. The red faced yellow billed storks move along with their beaks open underwater, disturbing the muddy liquid with their feet until the fish flop into their mouths. The pelicans tend to operate in lines abreast, driving the fish before them into shallows before scooping them up into their beak pouches. The striking 1.6m saddle bill stork makes quick darting movements into the water. Of the most beautiful are the elegant crowned cranes, with their golden tufts congregating in large flocks at the salt pans.
With about 400 of Zambia’s 732 species of birds appearing in the Valley, including 39 birds of prey and 47 migrant species, there is plenty for the birdwatcher to spot, whatever the season.
Every November a group of 9 elephants including some youngsters, come walking up the steps and straight through the reception of Mfuwe Lodge!
The attraction is the wild mango fruit that is being produced by a large tree close to the library on the other side of the reception. The elephants walk through at least twice a day for about 4 weeks and then sporadically for about another 3 weeks. During their visit we are constantly reminded that we are in their territory, not them in ours...
untouched ~ unspoiled ~ unforgettable
When the Luangwa is in flood the hairpin bends along its tortuous route are progressively eroded away until the main stream cuts through one of its loops, leaving behind attractive oxbow lagoons which are one of the most picturesque aspects of the valley.
Hidden away among the huge ebony and fig trees on the banks of one of these beautiful lagoons sits Mfuwe Lodge.
Here exciting wilderness adventures are matched by the enchantment of the lodge, the warm welcome from the staff and the courtesy and efficiency of service. Mfuwe Lodge bekons you to participate in an exceptional African experience... the rare opportunity to combine the adventure of a lifetime with standards of luxury, comfort and service totally unexpected in the bush.
The open-plan design of Mfuwe's new structures keeps the comfort and relaxation of guests in mind, but also capitalises on the fact that

One third of each chalet's perimeter can be opened, to allow the guest to enjoy the views, the sounds, the scents and the mood of the African wilderness.
Each chalet has a large private deck overlooking one of the lagoons.
Game activity at the lagoon continues day and night as breeding herds in abundance come out of the bush to the water to quench their thirst.
The bathrooms have both bath and shower, with separate toilet. The bathing corner can be completely opened to offer guests an open-air bathing experience.
